Factors in Considering Your Countertop Selection:

GRANITE:

Natural stone comes in many different colors, shapes and textures and is made of varying minerals. Many of these stones have natural occurring fissures, micro-fissures, fractures and superficial holes and pits. After the granite slab is cut an epoxy resin coat is applied that fills the naturally occurring fissures, pits and voids. After the resin is cured the slab is ready to be polished. The polishing process removes most of the resin leaving the micro fissures and pores filled. The polished granite surface is an all-natural shiny easy to maintain surface.

Because Granite is natural, each piece is unique. The patterns, colors and character change with each slab that is mined from our Earth. And the look of a particular stone mined today will not look like that which was mined last week. This is the beauty of granite and what makes it stand out in your home. If you love flow and character, then Granite is the perfect choice. Whenever possible, we will help you to select your granite in person for that perfect look.

Granite is very common and has hardness properties and stain resistance that make it ideal for countertops. It is recommended that you reseal your stone every 10-12 months to keep it looking it’s best. Fortunately this is a very easy process. Buy a sealer at local hardware store or on-line. Clean your stone thoroughly, then follow directions on the bottle. Typically involves spraying the sealer on, let it dry and then wipe clean.
While it is not panic time if you spill something on your granite, you do need to clean them up as soon as possible. Even when properly sealed, this is natural stone and is still somewhat porous. Spills from liquids that do not evaporate, such as oils (think butter, etc) will stain if left to soak into the stone. Don’t use lemon juice, vinegar or other cleaners with acid.

Granite is heat resistant and can withstand the heat of hot pots and pans without damage. Impact from a heavy object may chip granite.

QUARTZ:

Quartz is manufactured using primarily crushed quartz and granite held together with resin (glue). The mixture is approximately 66% quartz and 34% resin by volume. Quartz is hard like granite and is stain resistant (not stain proof) which makes it ideal for kitchen countertops. Under normal conditions it will not etch though permanent markers will stain a quartz counter. Quartz countertops do not require sealing and are heat resistant.

There is an influx of new non-branded quartz manufacturers which have the same quality as the well-known brands of Cambira, Silestone and CaesarStone without the high price. Typically, Quartz is much more uniform in color or appearance than granite. However, Manufacturers have also broadened the color offerings tremendously recently including the very popular “marble” look. There are many styles from thick, defined veins to soft, wispy veins.

MARBLE:

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed under heat and pressure that is hard to match in its beauty. On the mohs hardness scale a marble will range from 2 to 3. What this means is it will scratch easily and is porous and can stain easily if not properly sealed and spills wiped up. In addition, the calcite in marble makes them susceptible to acids which will etch the finish.

Much like a leather handbag, Marble will show wear. The bumps and scrapes, scuff and scratches all tell a story that becomes part of the Marble’s “patina”. The Italians consider a well-worn kitchen to be a sign of great hospitality and many friends. This is the beauty of Marble. If these characteristics unnerve you then perhaps Marble is not the right stone selection for your home.

QUARTZITE:

Quartzite is also a metamorphic rock composed almost entirely of quartz-rich sandstone that recrystallize under heat and pressure to bind them together. The interlocking structure of quartzite makes it a hard, tough, durable rock. Quartzite is harder than granite and rates between a 7 & 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. It makes very durable kitchen countertops. Like granite it will not etch under normal conditions.
